The Acai (Euterpe oleracea) is a palm that grows in Amazonia and northern Brazil. It is known by the natives under the name of ICA-cai, which means “fruit that cries.” Its fruit is a purple with high concentrations of Antocyaninas, potent antioxidants which are higher than the ones found in red wine. Acai berries are an excellent source of calcium, iron, vitamins B1, B2 and B3, vitamin C and E and essential fatty acids. They are also rich in fibre.
